was是am、is的一般过去时。was一般用于I、he、she、it以及单个人作主语的句子。当主语是单数时，如果句子是主语+系动词+表语结构，那么毫无疑问一般过去时用was；如果是主语谓语宾语结构，那么用动词的过去式作谓语而不能是was。当主语是复数时，如果句子是主系表结构，那么用were，或者动词的过去式。当用的是虚拟语气的时候，条件虚拟从句中对现在的虚拟只能用were to，不能用was。
