was是am、is的一般过去时。was一般用于I、he、she、it以及单个人作主语的句子。当主语是单数时，如果句子是主语+系动词+表语结构，那么毫无疑问一般过去时用was；如果是主语谓语宾语结构，那么用动词的过去式作谓语而不能是was。当主语是复数时，如果句子是主系表结构，那么用were，或者动词的过去式。当用的是虚拟语气的时候，条件虚拟从句中对现在的虚拟只能用were to，不能用was。
was是be动词第一、三人称单数的过去式，表示状态或存在，意思是“是”，“在”。元音字母a在与辅音字母w相拼时，发短元音/ɑ/的音，发音时，舌端靠近下齿，舌后部抬高，牙床接近全开，开口较大，双唇呈圆形，这个音出现在字首、字中位置，如：wad一卷、want想要等。
