the other是指两个中的另一个，这里other是代词，如：He has two daughters。One is a nurse，the other is an engineer。他有两个女儿，一个是护士，另一个是工程师。
the others意思是“其他东西，其余的人”，特指某一范围内的“其他的（人或物）”，可以看成是the other的复数形式。如：Two boys will go to the zoo，and the others will stay at home。两个男孩子将去动物园，而其余的留在家里。
other可以做形容词，表示其他的，比如other people其他的人。也可以做代词，但是做代词时一般不以原形出现，一般用以“the other”或者以复数形式“others”出现。others和some对比使用时，是“有些”的意思而不是做“其他”讲，如：Some cleaned the windows，others mopped the floor。有的擦窗户，有的擦地板。
